The Internet issue

2020.09.22 23:25 humanracer The Internet issue

The fact that Andrew didn't have access to the Internet is the puzzling part here. I think it's unlikely he could have been groomed offline. I still suspect blackmail of some sort. There was a famous case in Scotland around 7 years ago where a mother and daughter were found dead with slashed wrists in a hotel lobby. They had been driving for hours beforehand. There was no explanation for it other than some kind of suicide pact. However a year later they discovered they were being blackmailed, along with a male family member, as a part of a convoluted dating site scam. What I am getting at is he perhaps planned a suicide due to being blackmailed. But I still don't see this without the use of the Internet. Also it's very odd someone had no Internet in 2007. It wasn't 1997.
Although younger, this case reminds of the missing girl Asha Degree.
Asha Jaquilla Degree (born August 5, 1990; first name pronounced AY-shuh[1]) went missing at the age of nine from Shelby, North Carolina, United States. In the early morning hours of February 14, 2000, for reasons unknown, she packed her bookbag, left her family home north of the city and began walking along nearby North Carolina Highway 18 despite heavy rain and wind. Several passing motorists saw her; when one turned around at a point 1.3 miles (2.1 km) from her home and began to approach her, she left the roadside and ran into a wooded area. In the morning, her parents discovered her absence. No one has seen her since

2020.09.21 18:56 GodModeBasketball Analysis: Looking back at the 1949 Strictly Stock Tracks

It's time to turn back the clock all the way back to the beginning as the 1949 Strictly Stock Schedule and all 8 tracks that hosted a Cup race:
  1. Charlotte Speedway: Not to be confused with the current Charlotte Motor Speedway, this 3/4 Mile dirt track started it all. Although Glenn Dunaway won the race, it was later found out that he was disqualified for illegal springs. As a result, Jim Roper was declared the winner(Fun fact: Roper was the grand marshal for the Spring Texas race on NASCAR's 50th Anniversary season, in 1998). The track would host only one more race, in 1950, won by Tim Flock. The track was forced to be demolished due to Interstate 85's extension into Virginia.
  2. Daytona Beach and Road Course: The longest track to ever host a NASCAR Race(4.2 Miles), this track was instrumental in creating NASCAR as a whole, with the Streamline Hotel being right in the middle of it. It was a unique course in the sense that the backstretch was the Daytona beaches while the front stretch was Highway A1A. NASCAR President Bill France Sr used to race on the track in the 1940s and later would be NASCAR's first CEO. The track would be abandoned after France Sr constructed the famed Daytona International Speedway in 1959. Both the beaches and Highway A1A are still around.
  3. Orange Speedway: Also known as Occoneechee or Hillsboro, Orange Speedway was a 1-mile dirt oval, set in the woods of Hillsboro, North Carolina. This track stuck around longer than most, hosting 33 more Grand National races until it was dropped after the 1968 Grand National season. The track is still around as a forest park. Bit of a spoiler, this is the only dirt track to still be preserved from the schedule.
  4. Langhorne Speedway: One of the most feared and dangerous speedways, Langhorne was a 1-mile flat oval with little banking. The track would later gain infamy as 3 of the first 4 drivers to die in NASCAR all occurred at Langhorne. The track was not on the 1958 Grand National schedule. However, it still held the Langhorne Open, one of the most prestigious Modified races on the calendar. The track was finally closed in 1971. Currently, a Restaurant Depot, a Sam's Club, and a CarFax sit on the remains of Langhorne.
  5. Hamburg Speedway: Not much is known about Hamburg Speedway. However, the track was a half-mile dirt oval located in Hamburg, New York. The track would host only 2 cup races throughout its existence, with Jack White winning the first and Dick Linder winning the second. The Erie County Fair sits at the site of Hamburg Speedway.
  6. Martinsville Speedway: The oldest existing track to still have a Cup date, as of 2020. Martinsville is a track just over a half-mile in the shape of a paperclip. Red Byron, that year's champion, won the first running of Martinsville. Ever since then, Martinsville, besides the 1949 season, has held at least 2 races on the calendar, a Spring race and a Fall race.
  7. Heidelberg Raceway: A track that held Grand National races off and on throughout its existence, Heidelberg was a 1/2 mile dirt track, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The track would host 4 Cup races, in 1949, 1951, 1959, and 1960(Fun Fact: The last time Heidelberg held a race, Lee Petty and his son Richard finished 1-2). The track was still around in 1973, when it held a Grand National East race, won by Tom Colella. Raceway Plaza sits on the remains of Heidelberg.
  8. North Wilkesboro Speedway: And lastly, North Wilkesboro. North Wilkesboro was a 5/8 mile track located in North Carolina. Tim Flock's brother, Bob Flock, won the inaugural running. The track was a mainstay of the series, hosting 2 Cup races each year from 1950 to 1996. In 1995, Track President Enoch Staley passed away from a stroke. Bob Bahre took up a 50% stake of North Wilkesboro. The track would host their final 2 races for 1996. The track is still around, but it is in tatters. The two dates North Wilkesboro had turned into the inaugural Texas Motor Speedway and a 2nd race at New Hampshire.

2020.09.18 20:23 power-cube I have found unmarked graves on my property in rural GA that may be slave graves. Can you help me from the details provided to determine if J H Mapp owned slaves?

Hello. You guys have been so helpful from my prior post. Thank you! Here's my original post: https://old.reddit.com/AskHistorians/comments/itcs8y/i_think_there_is_a_slave_grave_on_my_property_ga/
I wanted to give you an update and some more help with the next step of determining if there were slaves on this property. I got a lot of great contacts that you guys provided in the comments. I did hear from Justin at the Society of Black Archaeologists. He was very informative and helpful and pointed me in a few directions.
I was subsequently contacted by a reddit user that works for the GA department of Archaeology that works directly for the GA State Archaeologist, Rachel Black. As I was writing this comment Ms. Black called me so we had a great discussion and she has connected me to a resource at UGA that she believes can help me further.
I went to the Greensboro Historical Society, but sadly it is closed (COVID?) and the phone number is disconnected.
I subsequently started doing some google searches as recommended on census and slaver owner lists. I have found some pretty detailed genealogy of the family and think I've actually found Sarah but the research has a different birth date (1839 vs. 1840 - Ms. Black said that date mistakes in research of this era frequently have errors like this). Here's the link: http://espl-genealogy.org/MilesFiles/site/p550.htm#i54978 and the entry I found says:
Sarah Jane Moore F, b. circa 1839, d. circa 1859
Pedigree Last Edited 8 Sep 2006 Birth* circa 1839 Sarah was born circa 1839. Marriage* 22 September 1857 She married James Robert Housand Mapp, son of James Mapp and Mary 'Polly' Wright, on 22 September 1857 at Greene Co, GA. Married Name 22 September 1857 As of 22 September 1857,her married name was Mapp. Death* circa 1859 Sarah died circa 1859. Family James Robert Housand Mapp b. 20 Nov 1836, d. 28 Feb 1900
Child 1. Sarah Mapp b. c 1859
I also found genealogy research that seems to tie on these links as well: https://everyonehasafamilystorytotell.wordpress.com/2015/03/09/slave-name-roll-littleton-mapp-virginia-north-carolina-south-carolina-georgia/amp/
https://jinsalacoblog.wordpress.com/2014/12/04/week-48-november-29-2014-52-ancestor-52-week-blog-rebecca-ann-mapp-1899-1906/
Other unsubstantiated finding - My neighbor who's family has lived here for many generations said that he "thinks" that our land used to be part of "Sunnyside Plantation". I found a small reference to Sunnyside (as a prominent house but not a plantation) in this link: https://www.whiteplainsgeorgia.com/about/history/
Things have dried out a bit now that Hurricane Sally has passed on through and I was able to take some pictures attached here: https://imgur.com/a/Cn8nBTI I've included written comments in the pictures to help add context.
So, a lot to digest. It would really help me if someone could point me at a resource that would identify if J H Mapp owned slaves.

2020.09.18 06:02 assessment_bot [ Fatal(4) ] [ 09/04/2020 ] Cirrus SR22, Chester/ AR

HISTORY OF FLIGHT
On September 4, 2020, about 2055 central daylight time, a Cirrus SR22 airplane, N733CD, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Chester, Arkansas. The private pilot and three passengers sustained fatal injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
According to initial information, the accident pilot called his flight instructoairplane mechanic at the Muskogee-Davis Regional Airport (MKO), near Muskogee, Oklahoma, on September 4, 2020, about 1900, and advised the mechanic that he intended to fly to North Carolina. The mechanic advised the pilot to leave in the morning. Fueling records showed the accident airplane was refueled about 1949, with 36.41 gallons of 100 low lead aviation gasoline.
According to initial radar data, the airplane departed from MKO about 2027. The airplane flew eastward, had climbed up through 8,500 ft, and the pilot established radio communication with an air traffic controller. The pilot was asked by the controller where the flight was destined and the pilot said it was Pickens County Airport, near Pickens, South Carolina. The airplane was radar-identified, was issued depicted weather, and the controller suggested a 20 right turn for the weather. The airplane flew about 4 four miles on this heading and then reversed course. The flight was queried on its heading and the pilot replied that they were returning to MKO. The airplane was observed on a northwest heading by the controller who asked the pilot if he still intended to return to MKO, and advised the pilot that the airplane appeared to be on a heading of 340. The pilot replied that the airplane had been caught by the wind and he was correcting its course. However, the airplane turned northeast and began descending. The controller issued the flight a 20 left turn and no response was received in reference to that turn. The controller then advised the flight to turn left heading 270. The pilot acknowledged the 270 heading. The airplane continued to descend and turn right. The controller then advised that the flight appeared to be losing altitude rapidly and advised the pilot to level the airplane's wings, and fly southbound. The controller subsequently queried the flight multiple times, advised that radar contact was lost, and no response was received. An alert notice was issued, a search conducted, and the wreckage was found in wooded terrain on September 5, 2020.
PERSONNEL INFORMATION
The 31-year-old pilot reported that he had accumulated 11 hours of total flight time and 11 hours of flight in last six months before his last Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examination for a third-class medical certificate dated November 29, 2017, issued with no limitations. The pilot was given a notice of disapproval after his initial attempt at a private pilot examination on October 27, 2019. The pilot's areas of deficiency were in preflight preparation, operation of systems, which included knowledge of constant speed propellers and knowledge of instruments associated with the pitot and vacuum systems. The pilot successfully passed the retesting for his private pilot certificate on November 3, 2019.
AIRCRAFT INFORMATION
According to its website, Cirrus Embark is a program designed exclusively for new owners of pre-owned Cirrus aircraft. The program includes complimentary training to address the specific needs of pilots and owners of pre-owned Cirrus aircraft. The program consists of a maximum of 3 full days of flight training. The pilot requested and was granted this training program on January 13, 2020. According to initial information, the pilot accumulated about 100 to 120 hours of total time at the time of his application. Direct owners or designated pilots of pre-owned Cirrus aircraft must enroll into Cirrus Embark within 30 days of aircraft delivery. Once enrolled into the program, the owner or designated pilot must complete the training within 60 days. According to Cirrus training records, the pilot completed all the flight training lessons. However, he did not complete all the online self-study lessons.
The accident airplane was a four-place, single engine, low-wing airplane. An FAA bill of sale document showed the airplane was sold to the accident pilot on January 4, 2020. According to copies of airplane logbook entries, an annual inspection was completed on June 2, 2020 and the airplane accumulated 2,053.8 hours of total time at the time of that inspection. The airplane was equipped with an ARNAV Systems, Inc ICDS (integrated cockpit display system) 2000 unit, which is a moving map multifunction display that also displays engine data.
The airplane was fitted with a Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) advertised by the airplane manufacturer to recover the airplane and its occupants to the ground in the event of an in-flight emergency. The CAPS contains a parachute (within a deployment bag) located within a fiberglass CAPS enclosure compartment, a solid-propellant rocket contained within a launch tube to deploy the parachute, a pick-up collar assembly and attached Teflon-coated steel cable lanyard and incremental bridle, a rocket activation system that consisted of an activation T-handle, an activation cable, and a rocket igniter, and a harness assembly which attached the parachute to the fuselage.
WRECKAGE AND IMPACT INFORMATION
The airplane impacted wooded terrain about 22 miles north of the Fort Smith Regional Airport, Fort Smith, Arkansas. An FAA inspector examined and documented the wreckage site. A section of upper tree canopy exhibited signs consistent with blighting. The wreckage path exhibited a descending path, about 30 down, through the woods from the upper canopy to the engine and cabin impact site had a heading of about 220. The debris field, which started about the area of blighting and continued southwest beyond the cabin and engine impact area was consistent with this heading as well. Charring and discoloration consistent with a small ground fire was present on items in the impact area. The propeller was found separated from the engine, and a propeller blade was separated just outboard of its hub. The remaining two blades exhibited leading edge nicks and gouges. A portion of the CAPS parachute was strewn out in the debris field northeast of the impact area and the remainder of the CAPS parachute was observed in its deployment bag. The CAPS rocket was found in a ravine about 200 ft north of the impact site. Components of the wings, engine, empennage, and fuselage were identified at the accident site. The cockpit instrumentation was fragmented, and no useful information was able to be collected from them. However, non-volatile memory installed in the ICDS unit has been retained to see if it contains data in reference to the accident flight.
The airplane and engine were recovered and have been retained for further examination.

2020.09.17 06:03 assessment_bot [ Non-Fatal ] [ 08/15/2020 ] McSwain JA 30, Clover/ SC

On August 15, 2020, about 1600 eastern daylight time, a McSwain PA30 Superstol, N146BB, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident at a private airstrip near Clover, South Carolina. The pilot sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
The pilot reported that he landed at a private, grass airstrip during the flight from York Airport (01SC), York, South Carolina to Gastonia Municipal Airport (AKH), Gastonia, North Carolina. He landed uneventfully and taxied for a takeoff to the northwest. During the initial climb, he noted that the airplane was not climbing as he expected. He maneuvered to avoid some trees; however, the airplane contacted the trees and he was unable to maintain control. The airplane crashed in a wooded area and he was met by first responders.
An inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration responded to the accident site and examined the wreckage. He reported that there was structural damage to the wings, fuselage, and empennage. There was no fire.
The wreckage was retained for further examination.

Human trafficking exploits vulnerable populations
Human trafficking exploits vulnerable populations
Posted on September 11, 2020 by Leslie Boyd

Angela Bradley was 10 the first time she was paid to have sex.

LINE IN THE SAND: At last year's Anti-Trafficking Summit, held at Mars Hill University, participants explored the Red Sand Project, a collaborative installation which creates \"opportunities for people to question, connect and take action against vulnerabilities that can lead to human trafficking and exploitation,\" according to the project’s website. Photo by Jennifer Wilson
A neighbor who was a gang member introduced her and became her “manager,” and when he paid her $100 after the act, she thought it was an incredibly easy way to make money.
“I had already been molested by an older man who gave me candy and presents, so this was nothing new, really,” says Bradley, who today works for Legacy of Hope International, a South Carolina-based nonprofit. The group is organizing the second annual Anti-Trafficking Summit, slated for Tuesday-Saturday, Sept. 15-19. Co-sponsored by Mars Hill University and Life 107 Ministries, this year’s summit will be online only due to COVID-19.
Bradley’s mother had a psychiatric illness and was addicted, so the young girl had no strong advocate at home. “I was trying to look older, and they wanted me to look younger,” she recalls. “And when they gave me $100, I thought it was great.”
But by age 17, she was pregnant and in jail.
“I gave birth to my daughter with one hand cuffed to the bed and one leg shackled to the bed,” she says. “That’s the moment I knew I had to turn my life around. It was a survival thing.”

A complex picture

Trafficking takes many forms. According to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [fact sheet](http://(https//www.acf.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/orfact_sheet_child_victims_of_human_trafficking.pdf), it can include not only sex for money involving coercion or fraud but also any kind of involuntary servitude. And while most folks associate trafficking with children, two-thirds of the more than 200 North Carolina cases reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline last year were adults. Still, the average age of children when they’re first trafficked is 15, says Bradley. According to the hotline, about 80% of trafficking cases nationally involve sex trafficking, and 90% of the victims are female.
Although trafficking can happen to anyone, certain groups are more vulnerable: people who’ve recently migrated or moved; those with substance use issues and/or mental illness; those who’ve been in the child welfare system; someone who’s LGBTQ, a runaway or a homeless youth.
Perpetrators also come from every race, ethnicity, and gender demographic, the hotline reports. They may be business owners, members of a gang or network, parents or family members of victims, intimate partners — even corporate executives and government representatives. Some leverage their privilege, wealth, and position to control their victims.
In a high-profile 2019 case, financier Jeffrey Epstein allegedly procured girls for himself and his powerful friends. Epstein, a registered sex offender, died in custody while awaiting trial. Other perpetrators, however, come from more modest backgrounds.

The second annual Anti-Trafficking Summit

The free online event is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 15; Thursday, Sept. 17; and Saturday, Sept. 19. The suggested donation for training is $10, and tickets are available online.
Traffickers use various tactics to control their victims, including physical and emotional abuse and threats, isolation from friends and family, and economic manipulation. Initially, they often promise to address their target’s needs; victims then become afraid to leave for reasons including psychological trauma, shame, emotional attachment or physical threats to themselves or their loved ones.

Sugar dating

Asheville resident Jennifer Wilson, who’s organizing the upcoming summit, works for Legacy of Hope International. “With COVID-19 and what it’s doing to the economy, even more people are becoming desperate,” she points out. “Sex can be used as an exchange for necessities like rent and food, not just drugs.”
Amid widespread pandemicrelated unemployment and the impending end of federal, state, and local protections, some economists are predicting 30 million to 40 million evictions in the coming months.
All these factors increase the risk of being trafficked, says Demetria Gilliam-Williams of Life 107. The faith-based organization works to eliminate sex trafficking and empower survivors. “We have to talk about familial trafficking right here in rural North Carolina,” she says. “These children are not being kidnapped; that’s not what it looks like here.”
Traffickers, she explains, approach their targets the same way a child molester does — first grooming them by offering forbidden items such as alcohol or small amounts of money and telling them to keep the “gifts” secret. But when those “treats” become the payment for sexual acts with someone under age 18, the law calls it trafficking.
Even a teenager dating an older partner may be at risk, says Gilliam-Williams. “It’s called sugar dating,” she explains. “If a young girl is dating an older male, and he asks her to perform a sex act with him or with someone else in exchange for gifts or money, that’s trafficking. Unfortunately, too many victims are very attached to their traffickers.”

Blaming the victim

Many victims aren’t even aware they’re being trafficked, says Angelica Reza Wind of Our VOICE. “They’ll call and say someone is making them do things,” she explains. “They may not even know there’s a name for it, and they’re unaware there are resources to help them.” The Asheville nonprofit works to eliminate sexual violence.
Despite the widespread belief that kidnapping must be involved for the law to consider it trafficking, that’s not true, stresses Wind. Any exchange of anything of value for sex with a minor, and any use of force, fraud or coercion in the case of an adult, is trafficking. Like Bradley, most people who are trafficked knew the perpetrator beforehand, and 80% are survivors of child abuse.

Getting help

If you’re being trafficked or know someone who is, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888, text 233733 or visit humantraffickinghotline.org.
To reach Our VOICE, call the 24-hour crisis line (828-255-7576) or visit ourvoicenc.org.
Wind believes part of the reason people think most trafficking victims are abducted and spirited across the border is that the #SaveTheChildren hashtag has been appropriated by anti-immigration activists on the political right.
Another major problem, she notes, is blaming the victim instead of the perpetrator. “When we read the story, it too often says that Jane Doe was trafficked, not that John Smith was charged with trafficking,” Wind points out. “We ask why didn’t she leave, report him sooner, avoid being trafficked.”

Legal protections

In July 2019, Gov. Roy Cooper signed a law based on recommendations by the state’s Human Trafficking Commission. Among other things, it expands the definition of “sexual servitude,” prohibits the promotion or sale of “sex tourism” services, creates a mechanism for victims to recover damages from traffickers or those who benefited financially from it, and makes it easier for victims to expunge convictions for nonviolent crimes committed as a direct result of being trafficked.
The law also funds education, says Wind. In October, Our VOICE will launch a project in the Asheville City Schools to help youths understand what trafficking is and how to avoid getting caught up in it.
“Education is key,” says Wind. “Having information helps prevent trafficking.”

2020.09.11 00:04 CaptKutchiesTA The Kutchie's Key Lime Pie Mystery Part 1: Overview, Theories and Leads

The mystery of Captain Kutchie and his key lime pie has haunted the internet for over a decade now. It’s been extensively written on elsewhere, so I won’t spend long on the details I assume many already know, so check this link for some more in-depth info (https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/9wo93c/other_an_indepth_look_at_kutchies_key_lime_pies/ )
The basis of the mystery though, is that since 2010, an individual or group has been writing cryptic, bizarrely written rants on various websites about a restaurant called Captain Kutchie’s Key West Cafe, usually focusing on either the key lime pies served at this restaurant, or the owner, Oswald “Kutchie” Paleaz. For a long time, it was unclear that Kutchie’s actually existed, but it was eventually discovered that the restaurant did exist, and was open from the 1970s until 2009, at the address 2227-2201 Asheville Hwy, Hendersonville, NC 2879. The messages about Kutchie’s have turned up in various places throughout the internet, but they usually share a common format. Here is one sample:
“I Tried The Captain Kutchie’s Key Lime Pies And Those PieGasams Healed All My Symptoms Within The First 4-Weeks! I highly Recommend Captain Kutchie’s Key Lime Pies For Anything That Ails You!….(“They’re Great”!!!.).. .. …Kobe Bryant May Be Retiring From Basket Ball But Captain Kutchie’s Is Still His Pie Of Choice!… …Can’t Get Enough Of That Key Lime Pie, Key Lime Pie, Key Lime Pie. Can’t Get Enough Of That Key Lime Pie Or I’ll Just Cry Until I Die, I Don’t Know Why I Just Love My Key Lime Pies!…. .\ .”
So, this is a typical example of what the posts look like, showing many of the common hallmarks: non-syntactic sentences, Capitalization Of Every Word, references to celebrities or politicians liking the pies and an odd radio-announcer like tone are some hallmarks of the writing style, though it can vary. It isn’t hard to see why, after finding these messages strewn across the internet like litter by the side of a freeway, people have gotten sucked into the investigation, and become suspicious of deeper meanings.
This 2-part longpost is going to be looking through the various writings of the mysterious poster over the years and the theories surrounding them, eventually leading up to my own personal quest to solve the mystery, and the findings I’ve made. I do not have a true wrap-up to this case, but I believe I have done the most in-depth research of anyone up until now, and I have discovered some hitherto unexplored leads. First, a look at the theories surrounding the case posited by other investigators over the years:
A Bot- This is a common theory due to the connection to a business, and the fact that the poster seems to respond to certain keywords (topics involving pie, sex, politics, and baby boomer pop culture). However, I think this one can be dismissed out of hand, the reason being that accounts connected to Kutchie’s have engaged and responded to people in a non-botlike way. More on that later. Beyond that, I can’t see any reason for someone to program such a bot, since there’s nothing to be gained from having a bot spend a decade posting nonsense about a defunct restaurant.
Oswald Pelaez himself- This is another one I’ve seen a few times, the assumption being that the posts are the Captain having a senior moment, or just fucking around in his old age. A visit to Pelaez’s Facebook page shows that he did indeed have a word-salad writing style, albeit not the exact same as the Kutchie's poster. However, it seems unlikely that this was the case, as a Redditor reported having contacted one of Pelaez’s sons, and finding that the Pelaez family appeared equally baffled.
An autistic or schizophrenic individual with a fixation on the restaurant: This suggestion derives from the unique writing style and monomaniacal interest of the poster. I have seen mental health professionals weighing in saying that the stream-of-conscious nature of the posts recalls their patients. I think people are drawn to this explanation because it puts something of a wholesome spin on the mystery- an individual with social/cognitive difficulties had a good experience at the restaurant while growing up in Asheville all those years ago, and now he wants to tell the internet about it in his one way. However, as again shown through communications with the poster, they are able to switch out of their “posting voice” and become more lucid, which may put this theory into doubt, or at least implies that the individual behind the posts is more high-functioning and calculating.
Coded messages or communications- This is a natural theory- the idea is that these posts are the modern equivalent of the Cold War number’s stations, broadcasting messages which can be read by the public, but are incomprehensible except to those privy to the info on how to decode it. The immediate problem with this theory is that the slow pace, repetitious nature, and semi-random web addresses of the postings would seem to make it hard to hide code in them. How would the recipients of the code even know where to look? However, there is also the possibility that it’s simply an individual screaming his coded messages into the void, to taunt people or conceal his intentions from all but a skilled codebreaker, rather like the Zodiac Killer or the Duclod Man. Why would this individual choose to hide his messages in the form of posts about a defunct restaurant? Who can say?
So, those are the major theories floating around out there regarding who the poster is. As we can see, a few of these theories can be dismissed out of hand, and one can potentially poke holes in all of them. Now that we’ve looked at the theories, it’s time for an overview of the posts themselves, as they have appeared over the past 10 years:
Foodio54- (http://foodio54.com/restaurant/South-Asheville-Arden-NC/c2e5c/Kutchies-Key-West-Kutcharitaville-Cafe) This restaurant review site hosts four separate reviews of Kutchie’s Key West Cafe. All four of these reviews are clearly written in the same style, and they were written over the course of several years. The oldest one here is by a user named VinnyGambini, after the character in My Cousin Vinny. Dating from December 2009, this may be the single oldest Kutchie’s post.
“Kutch Makes All Those Key Lime Pies From Real Ingredients, Including Real Key Lime Juice. "Anita" Kutchie's Lovely Wife Helps Him Now Making All Those Pies. She Also Runs The Front Too, As Well As The Office. Yea, Keep It All In The Family. Now That's How You Get Quality Control. "Pop", Kutchie's Dad Has Always Been There To Help From The Beginning. Kutchie's Mom Even Helped Out Until She Passed Away Several Years Ago. Threw The 80's Kutch and Anita Had Three Sons, Carlo, Santino and Joseph. Kutch Calls Them His Three Amigo's. All Three Sons Were Raised There In The Restaurant And Have Learned All Aspects Of The Business, From The Dish Tank, Mopping Floors, Cutting Meats, Serving Tables, Cooking And Tending Bar. Kutch Said That His First Road Sign Listed At The Bottom, "Family Restaurant". Kutch Said, "At That Time He Had No Idea That Someday His Whole Family Would Be The Ones Working There". Well I Guess, That's Life. Sometimes I Call Kutch and Ask Him How Are Things Going, He Says "Just Another Day In Paradise". Shit, I Can Tell That He Is Sick And Tired Of Doing The Same Old Thing Day-In And Day-Out. Kutch Would Never Admit That, He'll Probably Keep That Place Open To Train His Grand Kids The Business. Kutch Has Many People Calling, All The Time, Wanting Him To Start An On-Line Business To Sell His Key Lime Pies Country Wide. I Don't Know If He Can Bake That Many. He Seems Pretty Pushed As It Is. He Says That Maybe Someday He Will Throw Up Another Building And Put A Key Lime Pie Factory In It, And Start A Web-Site. May-Be He Will, May-Be He Wont, Who Knows. Just Don't Tell Him, That He Can't. “
Here, the poster refers to Oswald’s wife, Anita. He also accurately names Oswald’s three sons. I don’t know how many records about Oswald Pelaez were online in 2009, so I’m not sure whether the poster would have needed to know the family to have this information. The next oldest post is from 2012, and curiously, does not capitalize every word like most Kutchie’s posts. This poster signs their name as “Betty Joe Walker''. A Google search shows that there was one person with that name (there are a few other Betty Jo Walkers, but only one spelled J-o-e). Walker was a native of central North Carolina. And she died at the age of 67, one year before the post was made. This was the finding that made me start thinking of this mystery as something sinister. Why would a bot, or an individual simply sharing his happy memories, steal a dead person’s name? Two more Restaurant54 reviews of Kutchies’s date to 2013, and contain pretty standard content for the poster. One of them uses the name “Jake Carson'', which is used by this poster in other places as well.
Ozgold.com- Around 2012, the poster began writing posts claiming that Captain Kutchie was giving aways millions of dollars in prizes, and linking to a now defunct site called Ozgold.com. All of these posts can be found in a Pastebin here: https://pastebin.com/bT1z5ywT. He even links to Pelaez’s phone number in one of these. Oddly, he takes a negative tone towards Pelaez in some of these posts, writing in one “Please, Please, Please warn everyone about about ozsgold.com and Mr. OZ, That SOB has to be a crook or just plume loco. Maybe another Bernie Madoff, who the hell knows? It just ain't right.” Of course, this gold giveaway never existed either way as far as I can tell.
The copy-paste messages-
In 2013, the frequency of Kutchie’s posting really skyrocketed. IMDB, cooking sites, Fanfiction.net, Google Books reviews- nowhere was safe. Of course, the poster was mainly drawn in by particular key-topics: Pie, restaurants in genera, sex, politics, baby-boomer celebrities such as Johnny Carson. A few usernames were commonly employed for these posts: Roger Ramjet, Willie Jordan and Jake Carson. Most of these messages would be exact or near-exact copy pastes of one another. Some common topics of these posts included:
Key Lime Pies and Goody-goody Cheeseburgers- As far as can be gleaned from surviving ads, the restaurant prided itself on serving a variety of steaks and seafoods, but the key lime pies and burgers (which the poster always refers to as “goody-goody cheeseburgers”) seem to have been what made an impression to this person/bot/secret cabal. Occasionally, the poster will also reference Kutchie’s “prime ribs of beef with swamp water”. What does that mean- who knows?
Oswald’s wife, Anita Pelaez- generally refers to her as “lovely” or “hot”. "It just doesn't get any better than seeing her," as it appears.
The proximity of the restaurant to the Biltmore Estate- The Biltmore Estate was the home of George Vanderbilt II, and is by far the largest private residence ever built in America. It also happens to be located in Asheville. It seems as though the poster is trying to advertise the restaurant’s proximity to a major tourist attraction- heedless of the fact that the restaurant is closed.
Orgasms- Describing food as “better than sex” isn’t too weird, but our poster really likes to stretch out this saying. He refers to the food as giving him “piegasms” which he implies restored his sexual vitality. Here’s an excerpt of an example from the Google Books reviews of a book called “Incredible Orgasms”, by Marcelle Perks:
“.I Do Know First Hand That The Pelaez’s Famous Key Lime Pies Have The Ability To Turn Small Stream Squirters Into Major League Gushers Or Some Might Call Them “Niagara Falls”. Holly Molly, Let Those Good Times Flow, Baby! ….It’s No Wonder Everyone Believes That Kutchie Pelaez Is The Most Interesting Man In The World…..”Damn He Really Is” For Sure! …..That “Kutchie”, He Looks Marvelous Dahling!… ….”Hemingway”, Had Nothing On The “KutchMan”… ….Someone Overheard The “Kutchman” Say One Day That He Thought That He Was A Lesbian!… We Don’t Want To see Him Coming Out Of The Toilet With Just His Dick In His Hands”
Older Facebook Posts-
To my knowledge, at least three Facebook accounts have been linked to Kutchie's poster over the years. The oldest, operated from 2013-2016 is Jake Carson: https://www.facebook.com/jake.carson.98284/friends. The “Jake Carson” previously showed up as one of the reviewer names on Foodio54. The name bears resemblance to Johnny Carson, another obsession of the poster. This account had no friends, no photos or video uploaded, and never deviated from copy pasting the same few messages over and over. The Carson account was prolific in 2014, often posting 3-5 times/day. The frequency of posts eventually tapered, the last one being made in 2016. 2016 was also the year that the copy-pasted comments on various websites stopped appearing with regularity. Some people believe that the real Kutchie’s poster stopped at this point, and everything after 2016 has been trolls appropriating the role. As we will see, however, the post-2016 posts indicate an equally bizarre and committed writer, which makes it seem unlikely that it’s a different person.
The second Kutchie’s Facebook account appears in 2017. This is another personal account, which goes by the name Kutchie Pelaez. This is one of the main reasons some people think it isn’t operated by the same person- because the poster never previously claimed to be Captain Kutchie (though he did claim to have worked there in some posts). Unlike Jake Carson, Kutchie Pelaez doesn’t post copypasted messages. He does, however, have a variety of artists and musicians liked, including this band, The Ritards, with whom he has the following interaction: https://www.facebook.com/theritards/reviews/?ref=page_internal. What’s curious though, is that beyond this Facebook page, there is little indication that The Ritards actually exist. They have no music uploaded anywhere online, nor are there concert dates. Their posts do have a few likes though, most from people in the Eastern Pennsylvania area. When I messaged the Facebook page to ask what they knew about Captain Kutchie, my post was marked as “seen” almost immediately, even though the page has not been updated in two years. I received no response, however. While The Ritards seemed to be a dead-end, the Eastern PA music scene will prove to be important.
Also notable re: the Kutchie Pelaez Facebook page is the encounter Reddit user u/carinhabsburg had with the account, documented here: https://www.reddit.com/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/5c7g4m/what_the_captain_kutchie_of_the_key_lime_pies/. They messaged the account to ask who Kutchie was. He replied by sending a paragraph of text from a demo version of Silent Hill, which was in Swedish. While u/carinhapsburg was Swedish, they were adamant that there was no way Kutchie should have known that. Referencing a modern video game is certainly out of character for the boomer-persona the Kutchie’s poster had built up, so you can certainly see why some think the post-2016 poster is a different person. However, the vaguely sinister tone of this interaction is not exactly without precedent, given that the poster was already stealing a dead woman’s name in 2012.
Deviantart- The same year that the Kutchie Pelaez Facebook debuted, a Devientart with the same profile picture debuted- https://www.deviantart.com/captainkutchie. The bio of this account ascribes a variety of odd attributes to Captain Kutchie- His favorite gaming platform? “A sidewalk large enough for a heated round of hopscotch or marbles.”
His favourite books? “Epidemically overrated teen paperback novels. Ikea instruction manuals.”
His “Tools of the Trade?” “My fists. Spells and potions.”
The accounts gallery posts are now deleted, and I unfortunately did not take any screenshots. There were three paragraphs that they copypsted over and over- one about Anita Pelaez and Kutchie’s prime rib, one excerpt from a Longmont Potion Castle bit, and one Charles Manson quote. Longmont Potion Castle is an anonymous individual who has recorded their prank calls since the early 90s. Since anonymity and the adoption of absurd personas are LPC’s hallmarks, it’s not hard to see why the Kutchie’s poster chooses to quote them. The Manson quote, while tying in to the poster’s obsession with famous people of the 60s and 70s, adds another deeply sinister element to the mystery.
Patti Salmon-
In 2018, the poster begins writing about Captain Kutchie’s under the name Patti Salmon (a pun on salmon patties?) These posts are differentiated from the past ones by their explicit political anger. While politics were already noted as one of the poster’s obsessions, Patti Salmon goes on disparaging rants, only loosely tied back to the restaurant, against liberal political figures.
This is an excerpt from a comment under a blog post about the Kutchie’s mystery (also indicating that the poster is self-aware of the mystery community’s interest in them):
“That Rep. Jerry Nadler (D) NY, Rag Head llhan Omar (D) Minn, Alex Ocasio-Horetez (D) NY, Ayanna Lesbo Pressley (D) Mass.., Rashida Tlaib (D) Mich., Al Green (D) Tx., Pocahantas Vermont Tribe with Bernie Sanders, Nervous Nancy Cookville Calf., Rachel Madnow (MSNBC), Robert De Negro (NY), Shifty Schiff Cookvill Calf., El Chapo, Bozo O’ Rourke (Who Cares)., Maxine Impeach Waters Cookville Calf., Woopi Goldbrick (ABC)., Joy Blowhard (ABC)., Rainny Hostin (ABC)., Juan Williams (FOX NEWS)., Adoff Hilter (HELL)., Hell-They’re All really some kind of Commie’s ? Impeach Them NOW!!! Oh, I forgot one, The Rev. Al Not-So-Sharpton, very interesting butt Stupid! Let’s Send them all to the moon for the next 50 Years! What would Chef Captain Kutchie Pelaez Say? Well, He would probably say something like “No Soup For You!!!”. “Come Back 50 years”. Or something like for all those “Politicos” “Stay Away From Those Manholes” and he would say “Don’t Get None On Ya!”. Anyway, we sure-do still agree with all those “Kutcharitaville and Chef Captain Kutchie Pelaez Reports that everyone has been posting for the last 25 years or however long this internet thing has been going on. Captain Kutchie has been World Famous way longer than this stupid internet for damn sure. You can take that to the bank, Thats’ GOLD Jerry it’s GOLD! Or put it in your pipe and smoke it. He would also say, All of today’s Anti Trumpers are mad because, they were promised by The Dragon Lady HerSelf “Hillary Clinton” a leading Membership in Hillary’s 666 New World Order! What makes all these Racist, Commie Leftest Liberal Wannabee everything for nothing AssHoles and they’re Scum Sucking Pig, Fake News Chicken-Shit, Ass Licking Fake Reporters think that they can outsmart our “Lord Christ Jesus”? Hillary, your lord Satan was defeated way back on The Cross and yet, YOU, continue to deceive and recruit all those weak souls that you can fool too follow you back home straight too HELL!”
Note the interest in conspiracy theories here.
Newer Facebook Posts-
Finally, we come to the newest Facebook account, this one a page for a business rather than a personal account- Kutchie’s Key West Kutcharitaville Cafe (not linked here, gonna go ahead and say Do Not Interact). This page debuted in July 2020, just weeks before I fell down the Kutchie’s rabbithole and began this investigation. Unsurprisingly given its recency, it does not appear to have been discovered by anyone else in the mystery community.
The earliest posts from this page are simply shares of Jake Carson’s posts from several years prior. On July 12th, the Kutcharitaville page began posting longer messages, at a rate of 5+ every day. These posts are nonsensical jumbles of words that appear in other Kutchie’s posts, and appear to have been created by either a bot, or one of those story generators where you feed paragraphs in and it tries to rearrange them syntactically. Here’s a sample from a much longer post.
“BILTMORE HOUSE AND WE LOVELY ANITA PELAEZ IS THE PELAEZ IS THE WORLD THEY EVERYONE S KEY WEST FAME LOCATED NEAR THE BEST AND GRILL WHERE THE BILLED AS THE LOVELY COUPLE S KEY WEST FAME LOCATED NEAR THE MEL FISHER HE THOSE GOOD NEWS NOT A LESBIAN ANITA S BEST AND GRILL WHERE THE LOVELY COUPLE S BEST AND GRILL WHERE THE LOVELY COUPLE HOUSE AND THEY EVERYONE S SEX RATES BY KUTCHIE S BEST AND WE LOVELY COUPLE S SEX RATES BY NO LESS THAN HIS FATHER THEY EVERYONE S GOOD NEWS NOT A WIN WIN WIN FOR ANYTHING ON THE DOG ATE YOURS DICK IN THE PELAEZ OVER AND TREASURE MUCH MORE ANITA PELAEZ AND HER FAMOUS DEEP SEA UNDERWATER AND HER FAMOUS KEY WEST FAME MAY”
Interspersed with these posts are excerpts from North Carolinian newspapers that reference the restaurant, and photos of the exterior and interior of the abandoned building. What’s interesting is that the photos of the building don’t appear to be from anywhere on the internet. In other words, that means the poster must have actually gone to the building, and either broken in or been let in. This is the reason why I, as stated earlier, think that the post-2016 posts do come from the same individual as the older ones. The level of obsession indicated here is not that of a troll or a LARPer. It’s that of someone truly devoted to an inscrutable cause. Interestingly, one of these posts received a like from the Kutchie Pelaez account, indicating it was still active too in July 2020.
More recently, the account began posting coherent sentences that bear no relation to Captain Kutchie or key lime pies. In a post from July 28th, the poster copypastes the phrase “mail dropped to Rhode Island” 35 times, and below that “From Delaware.” Another post copies the phrase “My brother was eaten by wolves on the Connecticut turnpike,” which is a line from the Stephen King story “1408”.
On July 31st, the poster writes “Carrie Lam is not nice with China. She will end floating in a water tank”, copying this phrase dozens of times. This appears to be a macabre pun on the shared surnames of Carrie Lam, controversial mayor of Hong-Kong, and Elisa Lam, a woman who drowned in a water tank under circumstances that have made her story a fixture in the online unsolved-mysteries community. At the time of writing, the most recent post is from August 25th, and reads
“USE [master] Mexico. Mexico. Mexico. Soon we are in Mexico. (+14) and in we go. GO”
Screencaps of some posts, for posterity: https://imgur.com/gallery/R8ssLw6
This is the current status of the Kutchie’s poster. Dark, cryptic phrases, repeated on a Facebook page to 69 followers. Next, I’m going to be posting about the results of my personal investigation into the Kutchie’s mystery, featuring my interactions with this account, among others.
Edit
I have made a significant error in my post. The owner of the restaurant was Oswald Pelaez Jr, nor senior, and Anita was his wife, while Polly was his father's wife. So Captain Kutchie is still alive, I believe

2020.09.09 02:15 clme Scientific evidence and cross-country variability in cloth mask policies

LAST UPDATED on 21 September 2020
This post focuses strictly on the controversial issue of recommending or mandating cloth masks for the general public during COVID-19. For a regularly updated executive summary of the evolving scientific understanding of COVID-19 in general, see here. Overall, the available scientific and policy evidence indicates that mandating or even just formally recommending to the general public to wear a cloth mask in nonhealthcare settings is unwise. These 23 highly respected Canadian epidemiologists and public health experts have recommended the following standard for all COVID-19 related policies:
COVID-19 control must be balanced with basic human rights. People need to be empowered to make informed choices about their own lives and the level of risk they are prepared to accept. Universal public health measures are appropriate only when they are truly necessary, supported by strong evidence, and when there are no other alternatives...Any requirements for mandatory masks must be based on strong evidence...
Bearing in mind the foregoing standard, what follows is a review of the academic literature demonstrating that the requirement for strong evidence is not being met (the other components of the foregoing standard pertaining to human rights and personal autonomy are discussed in section #2 of this post):
Note: This is the expanded and updated section #1 of my older long post on masks. I exceeded the maximum numbers of characters allowed, and therefore had to split the initial post, with the former section #1 moved here as a separate thread. I will regularly update it.

2020.09.07 16:29 jptasznik Deciding to Buy VertDesk V3 base

tl;dr; After looking all over the internet for standing desk bases for my DIY project I narrowed it to UpLift Desk V2 Commercial, iMovR Lander, and BTOD VertDesk V3. I ultimately decided to buy the VertDesk V3 and I am very happy with my purchase. See photos at the bottom of the post.
I am creating this post to record my research and shopping experience and eventually a review of the BTOD.com VertDesk V3 base once it arrives. I will likely record a video of the assembly process and a review of the product itself.
First of all, I have been looking into standing desk bases on and off for months now.
I had access to standing desks at my office in Detroit Michigan where I worked until March 2020 when the pandemic hit and was moved to working remote 100% of the time.
Since early March I have been using a beautiful solid black walnut desk built by my dad over 20 years ago. It is 30” tall, 55” wide, and 30” deep. I have two 24” Dell monitors, Dell dock, Dell laptop, a keyboard, mouse and then a bunch of misc. stuff (Clutter). I also made the wise choice to buy a GTRacing Gaming chair in mid-March, which has made this setup totally usable for all this time.
I spent the majority of my 20+ year career working in an office, I didn’t realize how much time I spent not at my desk. There are so many breaks and times when I am not sitting at my desk. I walk over to colleagues’ desks for discussions, one on one mentoring, meeting rooms, just taking a break and walking around the office with go workers to move. I only had access to a standing desk for 6 months since moving to my current employer mid 2019. The standing desks at work are nice, but not great. Part of my problem was that I never had an assigned desk for more than a few weeks due to there not being enough desks for all the workers and I am in role where it was deemed less important for me to have a dedicated desk, I am a Software Architect. So, what that means is I am less likely than the Software engineers I work with to spend my time at a desk. Now that the pandemic hit, and I am working remote 100% of the time, I am at my desk all day. No travel time to meetings, no walking over and standing with engineers to discuss solutions to problems. No water cooler talk to walk to…we do have chat rooms where we have virtual water cooler talks, but no movement or standing.
My Requirements:
  1. Base only without a tabletop
  2. Be able to be incorporated into my existing desk (Fit inside the 50” x 25” apron) – This is totally non-negotiable at this point. I love the look of desk my dad built but want to be able to raise it up. This may look a bit strange having a 4-legged desk with an apron and then a lift desk underneath it. I am ok with that look as I do not have a place to put the desk otherwise and I love how rock solid it is as sitting position. I am very comfortable working at the 30” height with my gaming chairing and the keyboard at that height.
  3. Max desk height of at least 47” height - I am 6’ 1” tall and on paper it seems I should only need about 45”, but when I stand next to a wall and measure my arms at around 90 degree that is 47” - https://www.omnicalculator.com/everyday-life/standing-desk-height
  4. Strong enough to support the heavy 1” thick black Walnut 55” x 30” top, my two 24” monitors and all the rest of the gear, plus my occasional leaning
  5. Stable at high heights, minimal wobble (side to side) and rocking (front to back)
  6. Have overload protection to prevent damage to the equipment if too much weight is applied.
  7. Have collision detection so all my stuff is not thrown all over if it hits my chair, desk base, etc.
  8. Have at least 2 programmable heights for one touch movement to the standing or sitting position
  9. Under $1,000 without a top
  10. Solid long warranty (10 years ideally for everything)
  11. Ideally Made in America

I will have to say that this has been an absolute nightmare process. I love Amazon, but there are so many “budget” bases on the market. I quickly realized that there were not many that met my needs for under $300. What was more irritating is to find that over those that met my requirements had very few reviews and many had horrible experiences. OK. Time to turn to google. Well now we are into a whole world of hurt. Two sites kept coming up: www.workwhilewalking.com and www.btod.com.
Both of these sites are shady in my opinion.
  1. Both are highly biased, and the reviews reflect that. They favor the products they benefit from in terms of child companies getting sales or directly from the site themselves.
  2. In a lot of cases the reviews are not in line with other independent reviews.
  3. Excessive bashing of companies they do NOT sell or have a relationship with

After lots of hard searching I found:
https://www.nytimes.com/wirecuttereviews/best-standing-desk/
This site unlike the two above covered a lot more of the desks I was looking at, but not perfect by any means. I dug through all the products referenced in the above link, even all the products that didn’t “win”.

I narrowed my selection down to the following desks:
  1. Uplift Desk V2 Commercial (Top pick)
  2. iMovR Lander (No on Wire Cutter review)
  3. VertDesk V3 (Previously tested or dismissed)

I then started searching for any reviews of the above desks.
I found numerous YouTube reviews, Reddit Reviews, and other reviews.

UpLift Desk V2 Commercial
I was really leaning heavily toward the Uplift as the quantity of reviews, favorable opinion of stability, and lots of independent reviews. It now has a 10-year warranty on everything.
Size will work with my constraints, rated highly in stability. Lots of accessories and customization.
The Uplift has lots of recent problems in terms of delivery time. Since the product is a Jiecang OEM, which is based in China, the supply chain was really disrupted during this. I have seen comments of people having months of delays. Problems with the quality. Uplift was the only one of the three that was not made in the USA to some degree, NOTE important update below in terms how where the parts come from for BTOD VertDesk V3. This concerned me with having long delays on parts, but this may still be a concern with all of them as they all have parts from around the world.

iMovR Lander base
I really wanted to love the iMovR. I love that it ships out of Michigan. I love that it is manufactured in America (Frame made by Knoll in North Carolina), Bosch Motors, Linak electronics (Linak makes parts for hospital beds, so they know how to make durable stuff). Seems to have good support – always a human on the website to chat.
Has a 10-year warranty on motors and electronics and lifetime on frame.
Having said that I don’t like that I cannot find an independent review site that had reviewed them. Only the completely biased website above, YouTube, and Reddit. I have also read less than favorable views of their response time on issues. I also am concerned about the stability of the desk given the design and that the cross bar (well really a metal support attached to the top) was an extra. If this is a crucial part of the desk it should just be included. Also, the inclusion of this cross bar meant it would not fit inside my 50” apron. I also did not like that the support person was less than honest about reviews. I asked why there were so few reviews for the lander (3 on their site), which he said was release in early 2018. This was the response: “Fairly new John yes. You'll find independent reviews on YouTube, Reddit and Trust Pilot, we don't solicit for reviews (or pay for them like many folks these days)!”
  1. This may be a half-truth at best.
  2. workwhilewalking.com reviews them and is owned by the parent company – so technically iMovR does not directly pay for them. They don’t hide this on the site.
  3. Several of the YouTube video reviews have said that the iMovR provided the desk and in one case even provided a standing desk for a giveaway through the reviewer’s channel. Did they pay for the review? Maybe not technically if all they gave was the desk, but that is far from an independent review in my book. Consumer Reports is my standard for independent reviews because they do NOT accept products for review, they buy them like everyone else.
  4. If they are giving them to some people to review why didn’t they give them to Wire Cutter to be considered in the line up? This says to me that they are worried how they will fair when compared with others. Giving a popular YouTube star a desk who has either no comparison or has a really old model that could only be seen as an improvement is a safe bet.
Finally, the iMovR Lander base was $200 more and the accessories were really high priced.

BTOD VertDesk V3 - What I ordered
Finally, the reasons I ultimately ordered the VertDesk V3 from BTOD.com on Sunday 9/6/2020 and says that is will ship between 09/28/2020 to 10/05/2020, so probably delivered mid October.
UPDATE 3: On 9/14/2020 I received an email that my ship date is now 9/16/2020. Nice to see ship date come in and NOT out as apparently has been happening to people ordering from UpLift. Cross Fingers that it arrives before the weekend.
UPDATE 4: Well 9/16/2020 came and went without tracking information. I reached out and there was a delay. As of today Friday 9/18/2020 I received my tracking information and the desk base is on its way and is currently scheduled for delivery on Sunday 9/20/2020. It still shipped 10 days earlier than the earliest original estimate and only 12 days after my order. Now for eagerly awaiting the delivery.
UPDATE 5: Sunday 9/20/2020 and my base was delivered by Fedex. So 14 days after placing the order, and there was a holiday on 9/7/2020 in there so 9 business days, so very happy with the speed of order to delivered. I am not sure if I will have time today to unbox it, but I will post a link to a video of that process when I do.
I was really concerned about buying this product. But several things that helped me with the decision. It was reviewed on WireCutter. What is also interesting is that the WireCutter testers agreed with the stability claims of BTOD.com biased tester. The reason they did not consider it the best was it was loud and difficult to assemble. I have watched the videos on assembly of the desk and feel confident that I can do this. I am a woodworker and home improvement guy so this assembly looks reasonable and I already know it will take some time to modify the existing desk for this project to work. The other area of concern was the loud motor. In an office setting I think this will be a concern, but for me in my own home office I accept this. They have a solid 10-year warranty. I really like the design of desk. At first, I was skeptical of a single motor design, but then I read several review sites on poorly built or designed two motor systems where one leg gets stuck and one side jams up. With the single external motor design with the rod going between the two legs this seems like a near impossibility as the connection to the gear that raises the leg would to break for this to happen. While a two-motor system will have to use special logic to ensure that the two motors move at the same speed. Another thing that I really liked was that the VertDesk Legs are welded and NOT screwed. Welds are permanent and as such will lead to very stable legs. So, the 90 degree at the top of the leg where it connects to the tabletop is welded and the bottom of the leg is welded to the foot. This means that any rocking (front to back) will be the result of the glide having play or flex in the foot, and it appears from the video they do a very good job making this tight and smooth. Then the cross bar is a solid piece of metal connected to welded attachment points. This means that there should be little room for wobble as with an adjustable width crossbar that has screws that are pressuring the two pieces of the cross bar together could become loose over time. This has downsides too, that is that the product has very specific widths. With the Uplift V2 Commercial I would be able to set the width to exactly 50” that will fit in the apron of my desk, but I had to settle for a 46.375” wide option. Since I want a really stable desk this is a fair trade off in my mind. After watching both the Uplift desk assembly instructions and the iMovR assembly there are more screws that could come loose over time or compromise the stability as both desks have lots of screws that attach the feet and tabletop supports in place. As someone over 6-foot-tall I was concerned about the cross bar hitting my knees when seated, but with the Leg being pushed back (C Leg) versus centered (T Leg) that meant it was highly unlikely I would hit it on either the VertDesk V3 or the UpLift Desk V2 Commercial.
UPDATE 2: I also really like that this product is built in America and as such does not have supply chain issues like the Chinese OEM product from UpLift. Certainly, being geographically closer doesn’t mean they can’t have problems here as they do have many parts from other countries, but the frame itself is made here. I also feel better about supporting American workers who make the legs and assemble the products. Ryan from BTOD has corrected me on this point I was incorrect on this part of my write up: "The frames are made in Taiwan. The frames come into the factory at K&A. They put in the gears and glides, then make sure everything fits snuggly and smoothly. The gears, motor are from Europe and we use high end glides to ensure proper spacing and lubrication between the columns but the frames themselves are also coming from overseas." So there is still a good possibility of supply chain issues, which explains why the cost is $200 less than the iMovR Lander that has its frame made in the USA. In addition Ryan pointed out from this blog post https://www.btod.com/blog/2017/03/04/a-standing-desk-evolution-vertdesk-v1-and-v2-vs-vertdesk-v3/ “In order to cut down on our quality control issues, we have brought the assembly of the VertDesk v3 to the USA. We are now shipped pre-assembled columns, feet and work surface supports from our Taiwanese partners factory. The gears are shipped to us from Ketterer (Germany) and the electronics come from Laing Innotech (Hungary). The US factory produces the cross support, hex rod cover and work surface. All of the parts are then assembled and boxed for shipment from the Wisconsin warehouse.” This was my mistake in understanding the video and in NO place on their site do they claim to be more than built in the USA. I still like this added step as it still has US workers assembling and ensuring quality and while it is only a few parts actually being produced in the USA, it still matters to me.
UPDATE 1: Here is a photo of my current desk and setup. My plan is to keep the legs and add the standing desk base inside it to just raise the top when needed.
https://preview.redd.it/1289qb0q7rl51.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d899eab4b267234345bd1548b11c312a5732f23
UPDATE 6:
BTOD Vertdesk V3 - Unboxing
Sunday 9/20/2020 Fedex delivered the base. No visible damage to the box at first. After hauling it to my second floor office I did notice a small ding at the bottom, but after unboxing it did no damage as the ding was in a nice piece of packing material. The packaging was a little difficult to open as the box was sealed with both staples and glue. This is goos and bad. Well protected, but it also means that the box was a bit torn up trying to open it so if I have to return it I may have to do some repair work. The legs, main motor rod, cross bar, and motor rod cover were well packed and easy to remove. Legs were packed well, but one leg box had a bit of damage and there are two small marks on the front of the foot. The marks are nothing I will notice as from a standing position they are not visible. I also have to say I am happy with my decision as the legs do feel really solid with the welded on feet and top supports. Each leg is a solid unit pre assembled and they feel really solid. Over all there really are not that many part to this setup.
BTOD Vertdesk V3 - Assembly Part 1
I started the assembly Sunday 9/20/2020 in the evening. So far the assembly was harder than others may experience more because of the small space in my office. I will post a video of different snippets put together as you will see I have to keep on moving stuff to be able to assemble it. After reading and watching some things on BTOD I decided to assemble the frame on the floor before adding my top. This process really didn't take long. I was lucky and the alignment of the rod was pretty easy. I decided to flip it over before the top was on just to test that it went up and down correctly and to set the lower container stop. As you can see in the photo above my existing desk has legs and a wood apron around the top. I do not have the space to store this base elsewhere and it has a great deal of sentimental value keeping the desk intact, so I set the lower container stop to 30.5". This basically means that the lowest the desk will go is 30.5" instead of the typical 27". I will likely have to adjust this further once the legs are placed inside the frame. At first I was concerned that above 37" it kept giving an error F05, but then I realized that this was a collision detection feature that was having a problem because the control module was not where it was supposed to be per the instructions. The control box has to be in a specific place on the table top and it sitting on the floor was causing problems. By doing half inch steps I was able to move it all the way to the full height of 47" and then back down. As you can see my current desk is a rather big mess of stuff and I have to remove all that stuff, mark the location of the apron on the underside of the top and unscrew it so that I can attach the frame to it. The fun part will no doubt being getting help to lower the assembled desk the 30" up into the frame. So far I am pleased with the frame. I will post more when I add the top.
UPDATE 7:
BTOD Vertdesk V3 - Assembly Part 2
Monday 9/21/2020 I was able to clean off the mess that was my old desk and remove the top. I was able to flip over the assembled base and attach the frame to the top. A couple lessons learned. You have to assemble the cross bar in order to make sure the legs are spaced correctly for so that you can pre drill and screw the legs to the frame. After doing that you you need to remove the cross bar as with it in place you will not have clearance to get a drill in to screw in the motor rod cover. Once the cover is installed then you can reinstall the cross bar, but you will need to slightly loosen screws holding the legs so that there is some play. I had a hard time getting the cross bar installed again until I did that as slight movement caused them to be miss-aligned. To be fair the instructions call this out, but the instructions order of operations are different than what I had to do as the instructions assume a pre drilled top. Once I get that all done the next steps for adding the control box, wire management, controller, and flipping over the desk were pretty easy. To be honest the hardest parts of all of this assembly were related to my work area being very small and the DIY aspect of custom attachment to my top. So definitely when you do this assembly have plenty of physical space. I would say a minimum to easily do this project is double the width of your desk and three times the depth of your desk.
Review so far
So I have not placed the desk in it's final position, but had to actually get to my day job, but here are some initial thoughts.
Stability is amazing. Even at the 45" standing height that seems comfortable for me to work at there is very little movement. Typing very vigorously does not seem to move the desk or my monitor. I only have one of my two monitors hooked up so far, so we will see how things go once everything back together. I like the one touch programmable buttons. I have my standing and sitting position programmed and they work well. More to come later as I have to get back to work.
UPDATE 8:
Monday 9/21/2020 I completed my first full day of work with the VetDesk V3. Overall it has been great. I don't have my complete setup moved to the desk yet, but have my laptop screen and one Monitor. For a bit of my time standing have been using my wife's Simply Fit Board where you swing you lower body side by side and holding on to the desk because frankly I have not been using it much and my balance is not great. I am leaning pretty heavily against the desk as I swing side by side and the desk is NOT moving. No movement on any of the monitors. This thing is really solid and stable at the 45" height I am comfortable standing at.
UPDATE 9:
Monday 9/21/2020 I completed getting my setup all done...well other than a lot of cable management and getting a better stand for my laptop. See Photos of my two positions seated at 30.5" and Standing at 45". So due to me wanting to keep the old legs from my Dad's Desk I had to add 3" tall foot stands. The legs are 29" tall (30" with the top) so the min height of the standing desk of 26" (27" with top) was not going to work. There is a container stop position on the desk, but whenever you lose power to the desk for more than 10 seconds it goes into reset mode that requires you to lower the desk to the min height of 26" before it allows you to raise the desk. Overall adding the feet to the desk does not seem to reduce the overall stability at the standing height. I did a few tests with the Simply Fit board and the amount of shaking on the monitors is slightly more, but not at all at a point where it would bother me. Also with aggressive typing I don't notice any monitor movement at all.
Seated position at 30.5\" at the table top.
Standing position at 45\"

2020.09.07 15:39 rusticgorilla Lost in the Sauce: DHS hides intelligence that reveals Trump using Russia's playbook, again

Welcome to Lost in the Sauce, keeping you caught up on political and legal news that often gets buried in distractions and theater… or a global health crisis.
Housekeeping:

Trump’s playbook is Russia’s playbook

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in July withheld an intelligence bulletin warning of a Russian plot to spread misinformation regarding Joe Biden's mental health. The bulletin, titled “Russia Likely to Denigrate Health of U.S. Candidates to Influence 2020 Election,” was blocked by the office of acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf on July 9.
  • The bulletin states that analysts had “high confidence” in their conclusion. However, a DHS spokesperson tried to defend the “delay” in issuing the document by saying it did not meet the agency’s standards. This is curious because just a week later, on July 16, DHS circulated a bulletin on anarchists in Portland that officers admitted they had “low confidence” in. Why was the Russia memo held back but the Portland one released?
  • Trump has been pushing the same line of attack against Biden for months - yet another instance of Russia and Trump operating from the same playbook. For instance, in March Trump said there was “something going on” with Biden; in June Trump ran selectively edited ads asserting that Biden is “unfit to serve as Commander in Chief”; last month Trump ran a digital ad portraying Biden as perpetually confused and mentally unstable. Most recently, Trump said questions about his own health are only in the news because “they want to try and get me to be on Biden's physical level."
DHS is just the latest agency in the Trump administration to erode election security, following actions by the Justice Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) last month. DNI John Ratcliffe announced he was ending in-person congressional briefings on election security ahead of November and AG Bill Barr removed a leading career official at the Justice Department’s national security division, replacing him with an inexperienced political appointee.
The ODNI’s decision to halt congressional election briefs may have been influenced by top White House officials. National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien and Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, among others, have repeatedly discussed in meetings with staff and with Trump “how to restrict and control the flow of information on such sensitive topics to Capitol Hill.”
One White House official told The Daily Beast that Meadows has for months been wary of the type of briefings on Capitol Hill that Democratic sources can potentially use to try to make Trump look bad through surreptitious leaks to media outlets.
Meanwhile, interim Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee Marco Rubio (R-FL) said last week that his committee will be granted an exception to the ODNI’s new policy and continue to receive in-person briefings from top U.S. intelligence officials about election-security issues. This essentially means that only Democrat-led committees have been cut out of the process ensuring election security.
House Democrats wrote to Ratcliffe insinuating if his office does not provide the previously scheduled briefings this month they will issue subpoenas and/or defund the ODNI in the appropriations bill due by the end of the month. Read the letter here.
In addition to attacks on Biden’s health, DHS has determined that Russia is seeking to “amplify” concerns over the integrity of U.S. elections by promoting allegations that mail-in voting will lead to widespread fraud. Intelligence analysts say this strategy has been underway since at least March, coinciding with Trump’s own assaults on mail-in voting.
  • For instance, in March Trump said if he agreed to funding vote-by-mail expansions in the first coronavirus stimulus bill, the U.S. would see “levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again” (clip). Fact check: Neither party has historically benefited. On April 7, at the White House press briefing, Trump claimed: "Mail ballots are a very dangerous thing for this country, because they're cheaters… They're fraudulent in many cases" (clip). Fact check: There is no evidence that mail ballots are dangerous or fraudulent.
At a White House press briefing on Friday, Trump denied there is any proof that Russia poisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Instead of backing the German government's analysis of Nalvany's illness, Trump then redirected the criticism from Russia to China (clip).
"I don't know exactly what happened. I think it's tragic. It's terrible; it shouldn't happen. We haven't had any proof yet, but I will take a look. It is interesting that everybody is always mentioning Russia - and I don't mind you mentioning Russia - but I think probably China, at this point, is a nation that you should be talking about much more so than Russia. Because the things that China's doing are far worse.”
Trump then went on to say he’s “taken stronger action against Russia than any other country in the world,” but added “I do get along with President Putin” (clip).
  • RELATED: Leaked notes obtained by the Telegraph say that when Theresa May asked for Trump to take a strong stand after Russia poisoned Sergei Skripal, Trump replied “I’d rather follow than lead.” He pushed May to “put together a coalition” first.
The Trump administration plans to deport a Russian national living in America, a move experts say is in response to a politically motivated request by Russia. Gregory Duralev was persecuted by the Russian state for exposing corruption. He fled to America and applied for asylum in 2015. While waiting for a decision on his application, he was arrested by ICE and jailed for nearly 18 months. His case is now in court.
“DHS has acted no better than the Russian authorities,” Duralev said. “They simply fabricated charges against me for violations I never committed — and if DHS can trump up charges against immigrants with impunity, nobody can guarantee they won’t start doing it” to regular Americans. “So that’s the main message I now hope to send.”

Michael Cohen & Peter Strzok

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok has a book coming out called “Compromised.” In it, he alleges that FBI investigators came to believe it was “conceivable, if unlikely” that Russia was secretly controlling President Trump after he took office:
“We certainly had evidence that this was the case: that Trump, while gleefully wreaking havoc on America’s political institutions and norms, was pulling his punches when it came to our historic adversary, Russia,” Strzok writes. “Given what we knew or had cause to suspect about Trump’s compromising behavior in the weeks, months, and years leading up to the election, moreover, it also seemed conceivable, if unlikely, that Moscow had indeed pulled off the most stunning intelligence achievement in human history: secretly controlling the president of the United States — a Manchurian candidate elected.”
He now says he doesn’t believe that Trump is literally a Russian spy: “I don’t think that Trump, when he meets with Putin, receives a task list for the next quarter,” Strzok said, referencing the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. “But I do think the president is compromised, that he is unable to put the interests of our nation first, that he acts from hidden motives, because there is leverage over him, held specifically by the Russians but potentially others as well.”
In an interview with Politico, Strzok confirms that he and then-deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, opened a counterintelligence case on the president, but that it likely was never pursued. Two weeks ago, NYT reported that Rosenstein secretly closed it.
As if there weren’t enough political books coming out this summefall, Michael Cohen is releasing his, called “Disloyal: A Memoir.” The following a couple of quick takeaways:
Cohen says that he, Trump, Aras Agalarov, Emin Agalarov, and others, watched a strip show in Las Vegas where one performer simulated peeing on another performer, who pretended to drink it. Trump reportedly reacted with “delight.” Aras Agalarov, a Russian real estate mogul, is a trusted associate of Putin and reportedly served as a liaison between Trump and the Russian president during Trump’s trip to Moscow.
WaPo:
On Russia, Cohen writes that the cause behind Trump’s admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin is simpler than many of his critics assume. Above all, he writes, Trump loves money — and he wrongly identified Putin as “the richest man in the world by a multiple.” Trump loved Putin, Cohen wrote, because the Russian leader had the ability “to take over an entire nation and run it like it was his personal company — like the Trump Organization, in fact.”
...According to Cohen, Trump’s sycophantic praise of the Russian leader during the 2016 campaign began as a way to suck up and ensure access to the oligarch’s money after he lost the election. But he claims Trump came to understand that Putin’s hatred of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, dating to her support for the 2011 protest movement in Russia, could also help Trump amass more power in the United States.

USPS & mail voting

According to a Washington Post report yesterday, Postmaster Louis DeJoy engaged in campaign money laundering, also called a straw-donor scheme, at his former logistics business. Five of his former employees told WaPo that they were “urged” to donate to politicians in North Carolina and would be paid back through bonuses from DeJoy. Such a plan would allow DeJoy to illegally circumvent campaign donation limits.
“Louis was a national fundraiser for the Republican Party. He asked employees for money. We gave him the money, and then he reciprocated by giving us big bonuses,” said David Young, DeJoy’s longtime director of human resources, who had access to payroll records at New Breed from the late 1990s to 2013 and is now retired.
“He would ask employees to make contributions at the same time that he would say, ‘I’ll get it back to you down the road,’ ” said [another] former employee.
...A Washington Post analysis of federal and state campaign finance records found a pattern of extensive donations by New Breed employees to Republican candidates, with the same amount often given by multiple people on the same day. Between 2000 and 2014, 124 individuals who worked for the company together gave more than $1 million to federal and state GOP candidates. Many had not previously made political donations, and have not made any since leaving the company, public records show.
More than one million mail-in ballots were sent late to voters during the 2020 primary elections, an audit by the USPS IG’s office determined. Most of the ballots were late, the USPS says, because local election boards sent the ballots to voters at the last minute. Official press release.
[The audit] found the problems during primaries had been most pronounced in Kentucky and New York, where a combined 628,000 ballots were sent out late. In 17 states, the audit found, more than 589,000 ballots were sent from election boards to voters after the state’s ballot mailing deadline. In 11 states, more than 44,000 ballots were sent from election boards to voters the day of or the day before the state’s primary election.
One particularly troubling situation, auditors found, unfolded in Pennsylvania, where 500 ballots were sent to voters the day after the election.
Furthermore, only 13% of the ballots were mailed with the recommended bar code tracking technology.
Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) was blocked from attending two scheduled tours of USPS facilities last week. Local Postal Service officials informed her and union leaders waiting to accompany her into the building that national USPS leadership had directed them to bar the group from the building. A Postal Service spokeswoman said they simply needed more notice for a tour.
Many states, including important battleground states, are not legally permitted to process mail-in/absentee ballots until Election Day, leading to concern that results will be delayed by days or weeks. For instance, in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan election officials cannot even begin processing ballots until Election Day. Processing involves opening envelopes, flattening ballots to run through the scanning machine, and prepping for the scanning.
"When voters have to wait so long for results, it erodes trust in the process and leaves room for partisan bad actors to dispute the will of the people," said Amber McReynolds, CEO of the National Vote at Home Institute, a nonprofit organization.
AG Bill Barr made three stunning false claims about mail voting during an interview with Wolf Blitzer last week. First, Barr wouldn’t even acknowledge that voting twice is a crime - because just hours earlier, Trump encouraged his North Carolina supporters to vote twice to “test” the state’s mail-in voting system (clip).
BLITZER: It sounds like he’s encouraging people to break the law and try to vote twice.
BARR: It seems to me what he’s saying is, he’s trying to make the point that the ability to monitor this system is not good. And it was so good, if you tried to vote a second time you would be caught if you voted in person.
BLITZER: That would be illegal if they did that. If somebody mailed in a ballot and then actually showed up to vote in person, that would be illegal.
BARR: "I don't know what the law in the particular state says.”
BLITZER: You can’t vote twice.
BARR: "I don't know what the law in the particular state says.”
Then, Barr tried to assert that foreign countries could fake ballots, but when challenged he admitted he had no evidence (clip).
BLITZER: You’ve said you were worried that a foreign country could send thousands of fake ballots, thousands of fake ballots to people that it might be impossible to detect. What are you basing that on?
BARR: I’m basing — as I’ve said repeatedly, I’m basing that on logic.
BLITZER: Pardon?
BARR: Logic.
Finally, Barr cited a supposed incident of mail-in voting fraud in Texas. Too bad it doesn’t exist.

The payroll

Charles Rettig, the Trump-appointed IRS Commissioner who has refused to release President Trump’s tax returns, has made hundreds of thousands of dollars renting out Trump properties while in office. Rettig makes $100,000 - $200,000 a year from two units at Trump International Waikiki. When first nominated, Rettig failed to disclose his financial ties to Trump Waikiki. When questioned by Congress, he did not directly answer concerns about the properties.
CREW: With Trump’s name removed from some buildings as it began to hurt property values, we can only imagine how toxic it would become if a bombshell in his tax returns were released. Which means the IRS Commissioner has a vested interest in the success of the Trump brand—and of preventing anything that could damage it.
Voice of America staffers say Trump appointee Michael Pack is threatening to wash away legal protections intended to insulate their news reports from political meddling. Since arriving, Pack has fired the network's leaders, pushed out agency executives, refused to approve allotted budgets, and refused to renew visas for foreign employees.
  • Further reading: “Deleted Biden video sets off a crisis at Voice of America,” Politico.
Pack suggested the staff he fired and foreign journalists he essentially kicked out may have been foreign spies, without offering any evidence to support his claim. A group of 14 senior VOA journalists are openly disputing his explanation:
“Mr. Pack has made a thin excuse that his actions are meant to protect national security, but just as was the case with the McCarthy ‘Red Scare,’ which targeted VOA and other government organizations in the mid-1950s, there has not been a single demonstrable case of any individual working for VOA — as the USAGM CEO puts it — ‘posing as a spy,’ ” they wrote.
The White House is searching for a replacement for Federal Trade Commission Chair Joe Simons, a Republican who has publicly resisted President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on social media companies. Simons, a veteran antitrust lawyer, cannot legally be removed by the president except in cases of gross negligence. But the White House has already interviewed at least one candidate for the post.
  • RELATED: The Justice Department plans to bring an antitrust case against Google as soon as this month, after Attorney General William P. Barr overruled career lawyers who said they needed more time to build a strong case.
Richard Grenell, formerly the highest-ranking out gay official in the Trump administration, has joined a law firm founded by Pat Robertson that has a history of opposing LGBTQ+ rights. Grenell also recently joined the Republican National Committee to do outreach to LGBTQ+ voters.
The Trump administration has quietly named a new acting State Department inspector general. Matthew Klimow, the U.S. ambassador to Turkmenistan since mid-2019, is the third acting IG since Trump and Pompeo ousted Senate-confirmed IG Steve Linick in May.
Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s current special envoy to Northern Ireland, former Chief of Staff, and former acting head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is starting a hedge fund focused on financial services regulation. Ethics experts say Mulvaney explicitly using his knowledge of CFPB to place bets for and against companies gives him an unfair and perhaps illegal advantage.

Court and DOJ matters

Court cases
The Trump administration must, for now, stop winding down in-person counting efforts for the 2020 census, a federal judge in California ordered.
The three-judge panel hearing a challenge to Trump’s new anti-immigrant census policy seemed hostile to the government’s arguments in a hearing last week.
A federal judge has stopped the Trump administration from enforcing a rule change that would let health care providers deny medical services to LGBTQ patients on the grounds of religion.
Justice Department
Federal prosecutors are preparing to charge longtime GOP fundraiser Elliott Broidy in connection with efforts to influence the U.S. government on behalf of foreign interests. Broidy helped raise millions for Donald Trump’s election and the Republican Party.
Barr ordered another round of changes to FISA rules, tightening the use of government surveillance on political candidates or their staffers — a move conservatives will likely cheer, as they have long criticized how the FBI investigated the Trump campaign in 2016.
Before conducting physical searches or wiretaps of a federal election official, members of the official's staff, candidates for federal office, or their staff or advisers, the FBI must now consider giving them a "defensive briefing," to tell them that they could be the target of foreign influence.

2020.09.03 20:50 TheUnknownStitcher General Election Polling Discussion Thread (September 2nd, 2020)

Introduction

Welcome to the /politics polling discussion thread for the general election. As the election nears, polling of both the national presidential popular vote and important swing states is ramping up, and with both parties effectively deciding on nominees, pollsters can get in the field to start assessing the state of the presidential race. Please use this thread to discuss polling and the general state of the presidential or congressional election. Below, you'll find some of the most recent polls, but this is by no means exhaustive, as well as some links to prognosticators sharing election models.
As always though, polls don't vote, people do. Regardless of whether your candidate is doing well or poorly, democracy only works when people vote, and there are always at least a couple polling misses every cycle, some of which are pretty high profile. If you haven't yet done so, please take some time to register to vote or check your registration status.

Polls

Below is a collection of recent polling of the US Presidential election. This is likely incomplete and also omits the generic congressional ballot as well as Senate/House/Gubernatorial numbers that may accompany these polls. Please use the discussion space below to discuss any additional polls not covered. Additionally, not all polls are created equal. If this is your first time looking at polls, the FiveThirtyEight pollster ratings page is a helpful tool to assess historic partisan lean in certain pollsters, as well as their past performance.
With the conclusion of both major parties’ nominating conventions, pollsters scrambled into the field to conduct polls of swing states and the national race. The result has been a slew of high quality pollsters releasing their numbers on Wednesday as well as today, which paint a picture of the electorate right after the candidates are expected to have received a temporary convention bounce.

Election Predictions

Prognosticators

Prognosticators are folks who make projected electoral maps, often on the strength of educated guesses as well as inside information in some cases from campaigns sharing internals with the teams involved. Below are a few of these prognosticators and their assessment of the state of the race:

Polling Models

Polling models are similar to prognosticators (and often the model authors will act like pundits as well), but tend to be about making "educated guesses" on the state of the election. Generally, the models are structured to take in data such as polls and electoral fundamentals, and make a guess based on research on prior elections as to the state of the race in each state. Below are a few of the more prominent models that are online or expected to be online soon:

Prediction Markets

Prediction markets are betting markets where people put money on the line to estimate the likelihood of one party winning a seat or state. Most of these markets will also tend to move depending on polling and other socioeconomic factors in the same way that prognosticators and models will work. Predictit and Election Betting Odds are prominent in this space, although RealClearPolitics has an aggregate of other betting sites as well.

2020.08.31 01:23 _mr0 General Election Polling Discussion Thread (August 30th, 2020)

Several polls are in the field, so we won't have a full picture of the field until next week when more are expected to be released. Until then, here are the polls since August 16th.
